Get to Know Me

My name is Shaleah Scoresby, and I love being an ISR Instructor.  I love being able to teach children lifesaving skills and provide parents with a little more peace of mind knowing that they have added an extra layer of protection to safeguard their child from danger.

My most important job though, is being a mother.  As a parent, I have learned that the most important thing in life is to be able to watch your children grow.  We use baby monitors to make sure they are safe as the sleep, we put them in car seats, we tell them to look both ways before crossing the street, and to never talk to strangers.  We have a natural instinct to protect our children.  We, as parents are also only human… we are flawed.  We cannot possibly keep an eye on our children every second of every day.  It only takes a lapse of supervision, not a lack, and our precious children can find themselves in danger.  It is from this experience that Dr. Harvey Barnett has dedicated over 46 years of his life to the research and development of Infant Swimming Resource.

My 2 little girls are my world.  And they are what lead me to ISR.  My youngest was born with a condition called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita.  This is condition that affects her bones, muscles, and joints.  When she was 13 months old her femur was broken during a diaper change, and only 6 weeks later her tibia was broken as she was put in a high chair.  I knew that my daughter needed to be in the water to strengthen her little body, but I was always so nervous taking my daughters to the pool knowing that they didn’t have the ability to self-rescue if an accident were to occur.  I researched high and low what I could do to help my young daughters learn how to swim and self-rescue, and I found ISR.  ISR made it possible for my daughter to do therapy and be safe in the water at such a young age.

Because ISR has blessed my family so much, it has become my mission, my goal, and my passion to ensure that every parent in my community has the same peace of mind that I have with my daughters.  No longer fearing that a momentary distraction could be the difference between life and death.

I believe that together WE can make a DIFFERENCE, and see the day that Not One More Child Drowns.

PARENT REVIEWS

"We are extremely happy with all the time and effort Shaleah spent with our son. She was patient, loving and great with him throughout the entire process. She made his lessons fun and he loved going into the pool everyday because of it. Most importantly, he can safely float now which is the ultimate goal."

“My daughter recently completed her first ISR course and Shaleah was one of her instructors. To say she was so great and patient with her would be an understatement. She treated Leila, who was just 12 months old at the time, as if she were her own and helped her feel at ease. I am so grateful for crossing paths with Shaleah and would absolutely recommend her to anyone wanting to get their babies into ISR.”

"Shaleah was absolutely amazing with our son who was 11 months old. By the end of 6 weeks, he mastered floating on his back. I cannot put into words how thankful I am for her and all her hard work in helping him master this life saving skill.  She was incredibly patient and always tried to make him feel comfortable while teaching him at the same time.  We love her!"

Founded in 1966, Infant Swimming Resource (ISR), with it's Self-Rescue® program, is nationally recognized as the safest provider of survival swimming lessons for infants and young children. With over 45 years of research and development, highly trained certified Instructors committed to safety, and a proven history of success, parents can rest assured that their children are receiving the best possible instruction in the world today.

ISR believes pool fences, supervision, and pool alarms are important parts of a necessary multi-layered approach to drowning prevention. However, traditional lines of defense break down, and the over 4,000 drowning deaths per year bear a grim testament to the fact that traditional approaches are missing a key component: the child. ISR’s core conviction is that the child is the most important part of a drowning prevention strategy and our over 300,000 ISR graduates and over 800 documented survival stories are proof that children can save themselves.

Children are curious, capable, and have an uncanny ability to overcome obstacles like pool fences; at ISR we take that ability and teach them skills to potentially save themselves if they find themselves in the water alone.

ABOUT ISR LESSONS:

Infant Swimming Resource’s Self-Rescue swimming program is scheduled 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, for 10 minutes each day for an average of 6 weeks.

With a focus on safe, customized, one-on-one lessons by certified Instructors, ISR’s survival swimming lessons emphasize health, ongoing program evaluations and parent education to deliver the most effective and safest results in the industry.

The ISR program is for children 6 months to 6 years of age.

Lessons for a 6-12 month old focus on teaching the child to roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, and to be able to maintain this life-saving position until help arrives.

Lessons for children 1-6 years old focus on teaching the swim-float-swim survival sequence. Children learn to swim with their head down; roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe; and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool, where they can either crawl out or until they can be rescued.

Statistics indicate that most children who fall into water are fully clothed. Therefore, once the children are fully skilled they will practice their ISR skills fully clothed.

REFRESHER LESSONS:

Refresher lessons are extremely important in continuing and maintaining your child's ISR Self-Rescue® skill development. Children grow and develop rapidly from infants to toddlers and young children. This development process represents improved strength, coordination, difference in height and weight, and a more finely tuned cognitive ability. In accordance with this growth, children are encouraged to enroll in ISR refresher lessons annually.  Refresher lessons are 1-3 weeks depending on your child's needs.
